Vance County Schools High School Dress for Success Plan

The High School Dress for Success Plan has been established to teach hygiene, instill discipline, to prevent disruptions during the school day, and to avoid safety hazards in the school building. Acceptable dress and grooming is determined by the NVHS school administration.

The Five Components of the High School Dress for Success Plan are:

1. Students (males or females) may not wear pants or shorts that slack or sag.
Students must wear pants and shorts at the waistline.

2. Students (males or females) may not wear hats or do-rags in the building
Students must keep hats, do-rags, or other hand coverings in their
locker or book bag.

3. Students may not wear pants, shorts, skirts, etc., that are too short (Standard Arm Test Applies…bottom of pants, shorts, skirts must reach finger tips when arms are straight and resting at student’s side).

4. Female students may not wear shirts that are abnormally tight and reveal the navel or “spaghetti strap” that over exposes the body.

5. Male students, when wearing sleeveless Jersey shirts (i.e., Basketball, Football, etc.) must wear a sleeved shirt underneath.

The Vance County Schools Student Dress Code is still strictly enforced, and it is not weakened by the High School Dress for Success Plan. In an effort to clarify the wearing of certain apparel and accessories in the high schools, the High School Dress for Success Plan was developed in an effort to promote student success through a high standard of dress and personal appearance.

In addition to the VCS Dress for Success Plan, Northern Vance High School requires that all students adhere to the following expectations for appropriate student dress:

Ø All students must wear a short sleeve shirt or long sleeve shirt over any form of tank top/jersey.

Ø Students who wear skirts/shorts over leggings must follow the same dress code outlined in the VCS High School Dress for Success Plan. Leggings should only be worn with skirts and shorts that meet the “Arm Test.” Leggings worn solely as pants are not permitted.

Ø Hats/Toboggans/Do-Rags/Head Garments are prohibited for all students at Northern Vance High School. These items cannot be seen in the school building, unless the head garment has been approved by an administrator as a religious garment. Students should place these items, unless approved by an administrator, in their bags before entering the building.

Ø Neither blankets nor towels are permitted at school.
